St. Valentines Day

February 15, 2013

A short thought on this Valentine’s Day that just passed.

A brief look at who Saint Valentine, or Valentinus in Latin  who he was and did he in fact exist.  A look at WIKI and it seems there was someone who was named Valentinus who died on the 14 February.  I pulled some points from WIKI below.

In the Roman Catholic church there seem to be about 11 other saints with the same name. The name “valens” meaning worthy, strong, powerful, was popular in the middle ages. Strong and powerful are attributes of the Roman Empire or Church, whichever name you prefer for the group.

In the Roman Catholic Church the name Valentinus does not yet occur in the earliest list of Roman martyrs, compiled by theChronographer of 354.

I am left with the feeling that more than anything else valentines day is simply a calendar holiday. probably as pagan as many other Roman traditions, that is a social pressure point so that I will behave in a certain commercial fashion.

Brothers, lets us be loving husbands and father everyday.
